Report by CEO Peter McGauran (April 2010)

TBA has been active in representing breeders on several issues of vital importance to breeders. This has involved extensive engagement with Federal and State Government Ministers and officials on issues including AQIS fees and quarantine facilities, new breeding investment tax laws, the encroachment of coal mines on prime Hunter Valley breeding country and EI vaccination.

Priority issues include:

Quarantine Issues

Spotswood has been closed on the basis of affordability to the industry for a six month trial period whilst the increased numbers of shipments through Eastern Creek are assessed. Racing Victoria’s (RVL) proposal to build a new quarantine facility at Werribee racecourse is well underway, and when completed will provide facilities to properly... more

Statement on EI Vaccination (25 March 2010)

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) welcomes today’s announcement of support for voluntary Equine Influenza Vaccination by Federal Minister for Agriculture.

The Minister is to be congratulated for his strength of character in reaching his own considered position after months of scientific enquiry rather than slavishly following the antiquated opinions of vets who have no experience of EI apart from the outbreak of 2007. The Australian veterinary profession has largely fallen far behind international developments on the preventative measures used to minimize the risk of EI. ... more

  TBA Associate Membership Offer

The TBA is offering free associate membership to anyone with an involvement in the breeding of Thoroughbreds.

Members will receive regular email updates from the TBA office together with a copy of the Annual Report. In the event of an emergency situation, such as the El outbreak of 2007, breeders can be confident of receiving swift and informative updates from TBA.

We believe it is necessary to increase TBA membership to strengthen our capacity to more effectively represent breeders on the many on and off farm issues affecting their future. We want to hand TBA over to breeders rather than leave it to the province of a minority grouping; large scale participation will improve the health of the organization and through it the health of the industry... more

Breeders Contribute $250m Annually to Australian Racing Industry (March 2010)

A report released today by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) reveals that breeders in this country have committed in excess of $500million in the past two years in training fees for racehorses. This figure does not include the purchase price of racehorses and the cost of breaking them in, nor the added expense of vets, farriers and other costs incurred in the upkeep of racehorses.

The report establishes that breeders wholly or partly own 63% of racehorses in training. When you add together all the percentages of racehorses owned by breeders, it equates to owning the equivalent of 45% of all racehorses in Australia.

“The study demonstrates conclusively that breeders... more
